Telecommunications provider Eastlink has issued a caution to its customers regarding a potential data breach, assuring that sensitive financial information such as credit card or banking details were not compromised. The company, which has operations in seven provinces and Bermuda, initially notified some affected customers via email on Friday before 5 p.m. AT and is in the process of informing all impacted individuals.

Eastlink disclosed that accounts might have been accessed between late Wednesday and early Thursday, potentially exposing customer names, contact information, account numbers, and PINs. The exact number of affected individuals remains unknown.

A former customer, Caitlyn Horne of Halifax, who discontinued her internet service with Eastlink in 2023, confirmed receiving the breach notification. Horne expressed concerns about the potential exposure of historical account information, emphasizing the need for transparency from the company and suggesting the provision of credit monitoring services for affected customers.

Upon discovering the incident on Wednesday, Eastlink promptly deactivated the compromised platforms on its website and mobile app, as stated in the apology email sent to customers. Company spokesperson Jill Laing mentioned that Eastlink is currently gathering additional information and anticipates providing updates through various communication channels to ensure affected customers are kept informed.
