Prince Edward Island’s corn season is rebounding after a chilly spring, coinciding with the arrival of competitively priced corn from Quebec in local stores. Matthew Compton, owner of Compton’s Farm Market in Summerside, noted that the colder-than-usual May and June delayed the sweet corn harvest due to corn’s preference for warm soil and temperatures. To accelerate crop readiness, Compton utilized biodegradable plastic covers to create a greenhouse-like environment, enhancing soil warmth and aiding corn growth.
Despite the delayed start, Compton began selling his corn earlier this week, highlighting the exceptional quality and flavor resulting from favorable weather conditions. However, he mentioned that the main sweet corn crop in the fields is slightly lagging behind ideal progress, emphasizing the importance of timely harvesting to meet peak demand during midsummer when tourists flock to the island.
On the eastern side of the island, Mark Verleun of Keddy’s Corn in Montague echoed similar sentiments about the adverse weather conditions at the season’s outset but expressed optimism as the weather improved in early July. Verleun anticipates opening for the season shortly, aiming to sustain corn availability until October 1, contingent upon fall frost conditions.
Both farmers are monitoring the corn market dynamics in Quebec, where an oversupply of sweet corn has led to reduced prices, impacting local market competitiveness. Compton acknowledged the pricing pressure from Quebec’s surplus corn influx, emphasizing the need to maintain consumer-friendly prices while ensuring profitability. Despite the market challenges, both Compton and Verleun have kept their corn prices stable, prioritizing affordability for customers.
While cheaper alternatives may tempt consumers, Compton encourages supporting local farmers by paying a premium for locally grown corn, emphasizing the positive economic impact on the community. Verleun shares a similar sentiment, underscoring the importance of balancing pricing strategies to remain competitive without compromising product quality or local support.
