Cathy Link, a resident in the vicinity, expressed her shock when Ford contacted her directly to convey the news. Link had previously shared her worries about the shelter’s impact, particularly on the safety of children who frequent the park adjacent to the proposed site. The region had been in negotiations to lease the Bunting Road location due to the impending expiration of a lease at a temporary shelter on Riordon Street.
Following community opposition and concerns raised at city council and regional committee meetings, the province terminated lease negotiations for the Bunting Road site. While the region continues its search for a suitable shelter location in St. Catharines by year’s end, challenges remain in finding a site that meets all necessary criteria.
Niagara Region officials emphasized the importance of shelter services in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability. They are committed to collaborating with local stakeholders to secure a location that prioritizes safety, housing stability, and community well-being.
Residents, businesses, and service providers will be informed once a new shelter location is finalized. Coun.
