A shooting incident occurred near a community festival in Toledo, Ohio, resulting in injuries to at least 12 individuals, according to the police. The incident unfolded late Saturday afternoon, prompting chaos among attendees who sought cover. Deputy Chief Joe Heffernan of the Toledo police reported that two of the wounded individuals were in critical condition, with ages ranging from 14 to 61, predominantly in their early 20s.

Initial findings suggest that multiple individuals were involved in the shooting, likely engaging in gunfire exchange with each other. As of the latest update, no suspects had been apprehended, and authorities encouraged festival attendees to provide any photos or videos from their phones that could aid in the investigation.

The shooting transpired shortly after 5:30 p.m. ET near the annual Old West End Festival, located in a historic district of Toledo. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety at summer festivals for families.

City council member Theresa Morris shared sentiments about the profound impact of the shooting on both residents and visitors who have long enjoyed the festival annually. The festival, known for its two-day celebration featuring live music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping, marks the beginning of Toledo’s summer festival season.

Eyewitnesses captured moments of panic and distress on social media, showing people fleeing amidst the sound of gunshots and emergency responders attending to the injured. Fire Chief Allison Armstrong highlighted the challenges faced in transporting the wounded to hospitals due to road closures and heavy traffic from the festival. Despite the obstacles, all patients were successfully evacuated from the scene within an hour.

One witness, Kevin Berry, recounted hearing gunshots while attending the festival with friends and witnessing a gun being discarded nearby. Berry, who possesses medical training and military experience, aided in assisting potential victims in need of medical attention. He observed several individuals with gunshot wounds scattered across the festival grounds.

The ongoing search for suspects following the shooting has left the Toledo community shaken, reflecting on the tragedy that marred the festival’s atmosphere of joy and celebration.
