Three individuals are now facing legal action following the theft of a vehicle with a dog inside, prompting the owners to pursue the culprits across Pictou County to recover their pet. Maggi MacDonald and Peter LeBlanc successfully located their stolen car and dog in Alma, Nova Scotia, after it was taken from the New Glasgow Sobeys parking lot. The couple confronted the three individuals inside the vehicle, who then fled on foot.
The New Glasgow Regional Police announced on Monday that a 32-year-old man is being charged in connection with the incident on June 11. The charges include theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained through crime, fleeing from law enforcement, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fraud under $5,000, and theft of property, specifically Tim, a four-year-old Lab-husky mix.
As the theft occurred in New Glasgow but some of the alleged offenses happened in another jurisdiction, both the New Glasgow police and the Nova Scotia RCMP have filed charges. The RCMP confirmed that three individuals have been charged with possession of property obtained through crime.
MacDonald expressed her satisfaction with the charges being laid, stating, “It’s like Christmas morning. It meant so much to us that they had a charge for stealing Tim as well.”
Both police departments emphasized on Monday that civilians should not emulate the couple’s actions by attempting to track down suspects on their own. Constable Ken MacDonald warned against vigilante pursuits, citing potential dangers to personal safety. He highlighted that leaving the vehicle running with the air conditioning on, as a precaution for the pet’s well-being, presented an opportunity for the crime to occur.
MacDonald shared that after the incident, they no longer feel comfortable bringing Tim along on drives if there is a chance he may be left unattended. She likened the situation to protecting a child and acknowledged the need for increased caution in today’s environment.
The couple’s determined efforts to retrieve their pet have garnered attention, emphasizing the lengths people are willing to go to safeguard their beloved animals.
