Nunavut MP Lori Idlout’s recent move to join the Liberal Party has sparked widespread interest and concern, both nationally and among her constituents. Some, like Nunavut NDP supporter Joanasie Akumalik, fear that her shift in allegiance will silence her previous outspoken critiques of the government and its policies. However, Idlout believes that by aligning with the Liberals, she will have a more effective platform to voice the concerns of Nunavummiut in parliament. This move also brings the Liberal Party closer to securing a majority government, as upcoming by-elections are anticipated to favor the Liberals.
Previously critical of the Liberal government on issues such as the Inuit Child First Initiative and the housing crisis in Nunavut, Idlout’s decision to switch parties was influenced by the feedback from her constituents, who urged her to do so. She emphasized the importance of listening to the people of Nunavut and ensuring that their needs are represented in decision-making processes.
Idlout expressed her intention to collaborate directly with ministers to advocate for policies that better reflect the needs of Nunavummiut. She highlighted the challenges of being an independent voice in Parliament without official party status, noting that the NDP’s limited representation in the House of Commons restricts their opportunities to engage in debates and Question Period.
Arviat Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. supported Idlout’s move, stating that voters in Nunavut prioritize the individual candidate over party affiliation. Unlike other parts of Canada, Nunavut functions without political parties in its Legislative Assembly, making federal elections the only opportunity for partisan voting.
Former Nunavut cabinet minister Manitok Thompson commended Idlout’s advocacy for Inuit rights as a New Democrat, acknowledging her dedication to addressing pressing issues in the territory. Thompson raised concerns about the loss of an opposition voice from Nunavut with Idlout’s party switch, emphasizing the importance of challenging the governing body on behalf of Inuit communities.
Idlout reassured her constituents that her commitment to advocating for Nunavummiut remains unwavering, emphasizing her focus on addressing urgent issues such as overcrowded housing and poverty. She believes that her continued advocacy from within the Liberal Party will amplify the impact of her voice on critical decisions affecting Nunavut.
