MP Challenges Salary Increase Denial in Court

Share

A Conservative Member of Parliament from New Brunswick is taking legal action to challenge the decision made by the House of Commons denying his request to decline an $8,800 salary increase. Mike Dawson, who represents Miramichi-Grand Lake, submitted an affidavit in Fredericton seeking a judicial review of the Board of Internal Economy’s ruling on April 20, 2026.

Dawson contends that it is unjust to accept a pay raise when many Canadians are facing financial hardships due to the current economic situation. He expressed his belief that rejecting the increase would be the morally correct action until the economic conditions improve for Canadians.

Despite suggestions to donate the raise to charity or remit it to the government, Dawson insisted on his right to refuse the pay raise, emphasizing that individual MPs should have the autonomy to make such decisions. He highlighted that his decision has garnered support from various Canadians across the country, with 14 letters included in his affidavit commending his stance.

The base salary for MPs increased from $208,900 to $217,700 on April 1, following a formula tied to private-sector salary hikes. Dawson’s legal challenge has drawn attention and support, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation expressing its intent to intervene in the case to ensure public sentiment is considered in court.
