The U Sports Final 8 National Men’s Basketball Tournament is set to make a comeback in Calgary after nearly half a century. The top eight university men’s basketball teams in Canada will gather in the Blue Sky City for a three-day Canadian March Madness event vying for the prestigious U Sports National Men’s Basketball Championship W.P. McGee Trophy.

University of Calgary Dinos Head Coach Dan Vanhooren expressed gratitude for the increased support from alumni and other groups that enabled them to host such a significant tournament. The Dinos, despite being the lowest-ranked team, will host the competition at Jack Simpson Gymnasium in a single-elimination format where any team has a chance to claim the national title by winning three consecutive games against tough opponents.

Toronto Metropolitan Bold guard and U Sports National Player of the Year Aaron Rhooms highlighted the intensity of the tournament, emphasizing the do-or-die nature of each game. The event, starting with quarterfinals on Friday, will be live-streamed on CBC Gem and CBC Sports in both English and French.

The tournament, which originated in 1963 and last visited Calgary in 1980, will feature powerhouse teams like the Carleton Ravens, known for their 17 W.P. McGee trophies, and the defending champions, University of Victoria Vikes. The economic impact of such sporting events is significant, with the potential to boost Calgary’s economy.

The University of Victoria Vikes, aiming for another title, are considered favorites with their high-scoring offense. On the other hand, the Carleton Ravens, despite being the most successful U Sports team historically, enter as underdogs after a tough loss in the OUA Final.

Calgary native Mrigendra “Dennis” Dhaliwal of the U of C Dinos has been a standout rookie, drawing attention for his skills on the court and his inspiring presence. His performance and dedication serve as motivation for both his team and fans, as he aims to make an impact in the tournament.
