The Moroun family, known for owning and operating the historic Ambassador Bridge between Michigan and Ontario, has been actively opposing the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. This new bridge threatens their longstanding control over commercial truck toll revenue in the region. Recent scrutiny into U.S. federal lobbying and campaign finance data reveals the family’s efforts to influence the political landscape surrounding this crucial border crossing.
Following a meeting between Matthew Moroun, chairman of the Detroit International Bridge Company, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington, President Donald Trump threatened to block the opening of the Canadian-funded $6-billion bridge. The family’s ties to Trump’s administration were highlighted, including their collaboration with the Ballard Partners lobbying firm, which has strong connections within the administration.
The Detroit International Bridge Company significantly increased its lobbying expenditures under Trump’s administration, focusing on transportation regulations and international bridge construction and operation. Notably, the company paid Ballard Partners over $2.5 million for lobbying services during Trump’s presidency. The firm’s recent re-engagement in lobbying efforts for the bridge company coincided with Trump’s departure from office and the subsequent involvement of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Furthermore, Matthew Moroun’s substantial contributions to Republican causes have been evident over the years. Despite his initial support for Ron DeSantis, Moroun later donated $250,000 to the Republican National Committee in July 2025. These contributions, totaling three separate payments, underscore Moroun’s ongoing support for the Republican Party and its associated legal funds and campaign activities.
