Saskatchewan RCMP utilized a drone effectively in a rescue operation to save two individuals stranded in a wooded area during freezing temperatures on a dark night. The Prince Albert detachment received a distress call regarding a man fleeing from an armed individual in the RM of Buckland at approximately 3 a.m. on January 7, as per RCMP reports.

Following an assault and gunfire, a man and a woman sought refuge in the forest to evade the armed assailant, but subsequently got lost. The drone played a crucial role by providing an aerial perspective through thermal imaging, as stated by Staff Sgt. Steve Hurst.

The drone located the man and assisted him by giving verbal directions using his phone’s compass to navigate out of the forest. Additionally, a spotlight attached to the drone illuminated his path, while police vehicle lights and sirens guided him towards safety. Ground searches, guided by the drone’s aerial view, led to finding the woman in an SUV in a remote area.

Both individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. The successful rescue operation prevented potentially severe consequences due to exposure to the elements, highlighting the importance of swift action.

Further investigations into the incident resulted in an arrest warrant for Justin Charles, a 30-year-old from Prince Albert, facing multiple charges, including assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Saskatchewan stands out as the sole province equipped with drones in every detachment. Trained personnel in the Prince Albert detachment effectively utilize drone technology, emphasizing its life-saving impact not only locally but nationwide.

The drones’ thermal imaging capabilities prove valuable in adverse weather conditions, providing crucial support to ground officers facing challenging terrains. The drones, equipped with features like red and blue lights and a loudspeaker for audio messages, have been instrumental in various search and rescue missions and criminal pursuits.

RCMP’s drone operations in Saskatchewan in the past year included over a thousand flights, including search and rescue missions, assisting vulnerable individuals, and apprehending suspects. The successful outcomes underscore the drones’ effectiveness in enhancing emergency response efforts and public safety.
