Rob Shaw, a competitor in wheelchair tennis from North Bay, Ontario, is set to retire after participating in the Australian Open, as confirmed by Tennis Canada. Shaw, aged 36, specialized in the quad division, tailored for individuals with a permanent physical disability impacting upper extremities, with a significant functional loss in at least three extremities.
Throughout his career, Shaw amassed an impressive record of 54 ITF titles, consisting of 25 singles victories and 29 doubles triumphs. This achievement makes him the Canadian with the highest combined title count, including 10 victories at the Birmingham Nationals. His peak rankings were No. 6 in singles and No. 3 in doubles, both achieved in 2023.
Shaw’s breakthrough into the top eight occurred in 2022, granting him entry into his debut Grand Slam event at the U.S. Open, where he secured a runner-up position in doubles alongside American partner David Wagner. Subsequently, Shaw clinched two more second-place finishes in doubles at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2023, partnering with Australia’s Heath Davidson.
On the global stage, Shaw claimed gold at the Para Pan American Games in 2019 and silver in 2023. Additionally, he participated in the Paralympic Games in 2021 and 2024, reaching the quarterfinals in singles competition.
Shaw will kick off his 11th and final Grand Slam appearance on January 27 before transitioning to a part-time role as a Wheelchair Tennis high performance consultant with Tennis Canada.
