WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Enhanced Privacy

Share

WhatsApp has announced that users will soon have the option to use usernames instead of phone numbers, aiming to enhance privacy features within the app. Users can now secure unique usernames for future use in contacting others on WhatsApp. Previously, the app allowed anyone with a user’s phone number to contact them.

In the upcoming months, users will have the choice to be discoverable solely by their username rather than their phone number. This change is highlighted as a fundamental privacy enhancement by Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s vice president of product. The app will not feature a username directory, and names will not be suggested while typing, ensuring that individuals must know the exact username to initiate contact.

WhatsApp’s current privacy tools include blocking specific users and muting unfamiliar callers. While text messaging remains prevalent in the U.S., WhatsApp enjoys widespread popularity in Europe, Asia, and other regions globally.

The introduction of usernames will spark a race for appealing handles, with users expected to rush to secure desirable ones. Reservations for usernames are open early, enabling companies, organizations, and existing Meta platform users like Instagram and Facebook to claim their usernames on WhatsApp. Usernames must be 3 to 35 characters long, and high-profile usernames will be reserved to prevent impersonation, safeguarding celebrities, public figures, and government entities.
