“Calgary Urges Water Conservation Amid Main Break Concerns”

Share

Officials in Calgary are concerned about high water usage levels while they continue to assess a recently repaired water main that broke late last month. The city reports that residents consumed slightly over 500 million liters of water on Sunday, exceeding the sustainable threshold by approximately 20 million liters. This compromised water main, experiencing its second significant failure in under two years, is crucial as it conveys around 60% of the city’s potable water supply.

Although the pipe underwent repairs towards the end of last week, authorities urge residents to conserve water while further testing is conducted to ensure the integrity of the line. If the testing phase progresses smoothly, the city’s infrastructure services general manager anticipates reintegrating the water main into operation within the next few days. Sue Henry, head of Calgary’s emergency management agency, emphasizes the importance of individual water-saving efforts, such as shorter showers and reduced toilet flushing, emphasizing that these seemingly minor actions collectively have a substantial impact when practiced by the city’s 1.7 million residents.

Henry stressed that residential households account for 60% of water consumption in Calgary, underscoring the significance of each person’s contribution to conservation efforts.
