Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed his astonishment at the recent tensions between Canada and the United States, likening it to the situation between Ukraine and Russia. During an interview with CBC News, Zelenskyy highlighted the risks of American threats to annex Canada and emphasized the importance of resolving differences between the two countries.

Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a constructive dialogue between the United States and Canada, stating that such tensions between neighbors could be perilous, drawing parallels to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Despite similarities in border proximity and historical ties, the nature of current tensions differs significantly, with Ukraine facing a deadly war due to Moscow’s invasion, while economic issues dominate the Ottawa-Washington relationship.

During his visit to Canada, Zelenskyy focused on discussions regarding Ukrainian air defenses and winter readiness as the conflict with Russia entered its fourth year. He highlighted the establishment of a long-term strategic partnership between Canada and Ukraine, encompassing defense, security, trade, investment, energy, and critical minerals.

Zelenskyy underscored the symbolism behind the 100-year partnership agreement with Canada, emphasizing the enduring commitment to collaboration and shared experiences in various aspects, extending to future generations. Despite strained relations between Canada and the U.S., efforts are ongoing to resolve Russia’s war in Ukraine, with diplomatic discussions and proposals being explored to bring an end to the conflict.

Expressing skepticism about Russia’s intentions to end the war, Zelenskyy conveyed his willingness to engage in trilateral negotiations involving Putin, albeit expressing doubts about any significant progress until after Russian parliamentary elections. He acknowledged the challenges of finding a resolution in the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the paramount importance of achieving peace and halting further loss of life.

Amid the stalled diplomatic efforts and escalating hostilities, Zelenskyy reiterated the devastating toll of the war, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize peace over conflict. Despite labeling Putin as an “enemy,” Zelenskyy acknowledged the potential for dialogue with adversaries as a pathway towards peace.

The quest for peace remains paramount, with both Ukraine and Russia grappling with the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict. Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada served as a platform to address critical defense issues and underscore the urgent need for global efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
