Conservative Member of Parliament Jamil Jivani took to social media to express his disappointment over the lack of an alternative to the ruling Liberals. This occurred on the same day that the Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, embarked on a tour in the U.S. to advocate for tariff-free trade.
In a video shared online, Jivani criticized individuals who he believes should be presenting a different option to the Liberals but instead seem to be seeking favor from those in power. He emphasized that it is his responsibility, along with that of the Conservative Party, to offer an alternative perspective in Ottawa.
Jivani highlighted the importance of promoting a vision for Canada that fosters a closer relationship with the United States, prevents economic crises, facilitates infrastructure development, and bolsters the economy. He also raised concerns about the Liberal government leveraging tensions with the U.S. to evade public scrutiny and criticized the media for labeling dissenting voices against Liberal policies as “traitors.” Additionally, he criticized the government’s efforts to deepen ties with China.
Although Jivani did not directly mention Poilievre in his remarks, the timing of his video prompted former Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney to criticize him. Kenney commended Poilievre for championing Canada and free trade, contrasting Jivani’s actions by suggesting he was undermining Poilievre’s initiatives.
Poilievre initiated a two-day U.S. tour, expressing that Canadians are feeling “wounded” and “confused” about why Canada has become a prime target for the Trump administration. He emphasized the importance of standing up for Canada’s sovereignty and advocated for a strengthened relationship with the U.S. to counter mutual strategic rivals like China.
Despite making multiple trips to the U.S., Poilievre refrained from directly criticizing Prime Minister Mark Carney in American territory. However, he urged the government to disclose the rejected trade deal details, call back Parliament, and present an analysis of Canada’s counter-tariffs.
Jivani, known for his friendship with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, met with U.S. trade officials during two visits to Washington, D.C. He previously stated that Canada would harm itself by continuing an “anti-America hissy-fit,” a stance that diverged from Poilievre’s official position on U.S.-Canada relations.
