Robin Williams’ children have reactivated the late actor and comedian’s dormant Instagram account in response to the proliferation of unauthorized AI creations resembling their father. Williams passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63, with an autopsy revealing he had Lewy body dementia.
In a recent post, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention to maintain the Instagram account, “therobinwilliams,” as a secure and authentic space to honor their father’s legacy through genuine stories, photos, and memories. They emphasized their desire to share his exceptional talent and humor while cherishing the moments that brought laughter to them and his fans, commemorating his remarkable life and contributions that continue to inspire people worldwide.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning film, television, and stage, Williams achieved fame for his roles in various works such as the television series “Mork & Mindy” (1978-82) and acclaimed films like “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). Notably, he garnered an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992).
In recent times, AI-generated videos featuring Williams have surfaced online, depicting him in podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and even commenting on aspects like the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” The creation of such content was facilitated by OpenAI’s video platform, Sora, which faced closure in March following objections from the families of public figures like Williams, Michael Jackson, Mister Rogers, and Martin Luther King Jr., who were depicted in controversial scenarios.
Zelda Williams, an accomplished actor and director, has been outspoken against the proliferation of AI replicas of her late father. She has urged fans to refrain from sharing such videos, citing them as inappropriate and contrary to her father’s wishes. In an Instagram update, she highlighted the family’s decision to revive Robin Williams’ Instagram account as a means of combatting the misuse of AI technologies, aiming to provide a platform for genuine and original content showcasing her father’s life and work.
While some individuals like actor Matthew Lawrence have expressed interest in utilizing AI to recreate Williams’ voice for special projects, they emphasize the importance of obtaining consent from the Williams family before proceeding. Similarly, Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has condemned the use of AI to replicate her father’s likeness in digital content.
