Hope is diminishing for the survival of a 13-year-old boy and his 10-year-old brother who went missing after falling into the rapids at Nutimik Lake in Manitoba, according to RCMP. RCMP Staff Sgt. Cory Meyers stated that witnesses observed the boys being swept under the water and not resurfacing.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Aaron Au Ramirez, 13, and Maximo Au Ramirez, 10, slipped into the fast-moving rapids near Sturgeon Falls. The younger brother fell into the rapids first, and the older brother attempted to rescue him, leading both boys to be carried downstream by the current.
Despite search efforts revealing some clothing items believed to belong to the older boy, no other significant signs have been found. The boys, along with their father and friends, were on a day trip from Winnipeg to Whiteshell Provincial Park for fishing, as per Allison Baker-Thiessen, the owner of Nutimik Lodge.
The community has come together to support the family during this tragic time, with Baker-Thiessen mentioning the overwhelming solidarity and assistance being provided. Search operations involving private boaters, RCMP’s underwater recovery team, and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team (HEART) have been ongoing, but the boys have not been located yet.
The challenging conditions, both emotionally and physically, coupled with the complexities of the lake’s terrain, have made the search efforts arduous. Despite the obstacles, the search teams remain dedicated and determined to locate the missing boys and bring them back to their family.
Nutimik Lodge is accommodating the family on its premises to provide them with privacy and support while the search continues. Additionally, a fundraiser has been initiated by Baker-Thiessen and her husband on GoFundMe to aid the family during this difficult period.
Sturgeon Falls, where the incident occurred, is known for its treacherous waters, emphasizing the need for caution when near the rapids. Baker-Thiessen stressed the importance of maintaining a safe distance from the water’s edge to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Efforts to enhance safety measures in the area are underway, with Manitoba Parks reviewing existing precautions. Warning signs and cautions have been posted near the falls to alert visitors about the potential risks associated with the area.
