The Toronto Maple Leafs have dismissed head coach Craig Berube following the team’s disappointing finish at the bottom of the NHL’s Atlantic Division this season. Berube’s tenure with the Maple Leafs came to an end after two years. While he led the team to a successful 108-point season in his first year, Toronto struggled significantly during the 2025-26 season.

General manager John Chayka stated that the decision to part ways with Berube was reached after a discussion about his future. Chayka emphasized that the move was not a reflection of Berube’s coaching abilities but rather a strategic decision for the team’s future direction.

Berube had expressed interest in returning for the next season, showcasing his dedication and connection with the players. Chayka mentioned that the coaching change was part of a larger restructuring effort involving senior executive director of hockey operations, Mats Sundin.

Chayka, who recently assumed the role of general manager, highlighted that the search for Berube’s replacement would be comprehensive and meticulous to ensure the right fit for the team. Despite Berube’s overall record of 84-62-18 with the Maple Leafs, the team struggled with a 32-36-14 performance in the latest season, marking a significant decline in points from the previous year.

The Maple Leafs faced challenges throughout the season, including injuries and defensive issues, impacting their performance on the ice. Despite having talented players like Auston Matthews and William Nylander, the team encountered difficulties, especially in their power play and defensive capabilities.

Berube, a former NHL player, had a coaching journey that began with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. He later achieved success with the St. Louis Blues, guiding them to their first Stanley Cup victory in 2019. However, his time with the Maple Leafs did not replicate the same level of success as in previous coaching roles.

The upcoming NHL Draft will be crucial for the Maple Leafs as they hold the first overall pick. The new head coach will play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s future direction and coaching staff.
