A high school senior hockey player named Colin Dorgan, who recently suffered the loss of three family members in a tragic shooting at a Rhode Island ice rink, scored the winning goal in double overtime, propelling the Blackstone Valley Co-op team into the finals in Providence. The incident occurred during a hockey game on February 16 in Pawtucket, where Colin’s mother and brother, Rhonda and Aidan Dorgan, were fatally shot, along with his grandfather Gerald Dorgan, who later succumbed to his injuries. The shooter, identified as Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano, died by suicide.
Following the shooting, all high school sports events in Rhode Island were postponed for a week. However, Blackstone Valley returned to the ice earlier this month, with players wearing jerseys adorned with hearts bearing the initials of the deceased family members. Colin’s game-winning goal against Portsmouth sealed the team’s victory after a playoff win on March 7.
Colin Dorgan expressed his joy, calling it the “greatest moment” of his life, in an interview with WPRI-TV. Authorities confirmed that the shooter targeted specific family members. Law enforcement praised the quick actions of several individuals who intervened and subdued the attacker, preventing further harm. Among the injured were Rhonda Dorgan’s mother, Linda Dorgan, and family friend Thomas Geruso.
