Calgary-based Suncor Energy has revealed significant changes in the offshore oil industry of Newfoundland and Labrador by deciding to divest its interests in three oilfields. The company announced on Sunday that it has struck a deal with U.K.-based Ithaca Energy to sell its ownership stakes in Terra Nova, White Rose, and West White Rose assets. This transaction, valued at $1.2 billion in cash upfront with an additional contingent payment of up to $350 million tied to future oil prices, underscores Suncor’s commitment to enhancing long-term shareholder value.

Suncor’s CEO, Rich Kruger, emphasized that this strategic move aligns with the company’s focus on maximizing shareholder value through a portfolio centered on its competitive strengths and the vast oil sands resources it possesses. The deal entails Ithaca taking over investment commitments and all future liabilities associated with the assets, including a substantial regulatory well compliance program and abandonment and lease liabilities.

The transaction, effective as of July 1, is slated to conclude early in the upcoming year pending closing conditions, regulatory approvals, and partner consents. Suncor clarified that it will retain its interests in the oilfields of Hebron and Hibernia in Newfoundland and Labrador. Meanwhile, Ithaca expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, viewing it as a strategic fit with its growth objectives.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Energy and Mines Minister, Lloyd Parrott, welcomed the development, noting Suncor’s pivot back to its core operations in the oil sands. Parrott praised Ithaca’s expertise in challenging environments like the North Sea and highlighted the potential for extended oilfield lifespans and collaboration with other industry players.

Echoing optimism, OilCo CEO Jim Keating hailed the deal as a positive signal for the province’s oil and gas sector, emphasizing Ithaca’s track record in late-life field development. Keating underscored the potential for fresh ideas and risk appetite that new entrants like Ithaca bring to offshore basins, suggesting future collaborations on projects like Equinor’s Bay du Nord venture.

The announcement drew attention from Liberal energy critic Fred Hutton, who acknowledged the common industry practice of stake divestments while expressing interest in potential job impacts. Hutton highlighted the significance of Ithaca’s substantial presence in the province’s oil industry and its potential positive implications for Newfoundland and Labrador.
