Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is set to embark on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for approximately six months. Kutryk, an engineer, fighter pilot, and test pilot from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., was selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 2017.

Originally scheduled to launch on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, Kutryk will now be traveling aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon due to delays in Boeing’s mission. Despite a brief setback, Kutryk remains confident in the preparedness of the spacecraft for the journey.

During his time in space, Kutryk will carry various items representing Canadian organizations and institutions. Notably, he will bring along Canadian flags and a cherished old pocket watch that holds sentimental value as it traveled with his family from Ukraine to Canada. The historic timepiece, already aboard the ISS from an earlier supply launch, symbolizes the transformative power of exploration.

Expressing his anticipation for the mission, Kutryk shared his simple yet profound excitement about looking out of the spacecraft’s window to gaze at Earth. Joining him on the Crew 13 launch are NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins, Luke Delaney, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteriatnikov, who will engage in diverse experiments aboard the ISS, including Canadian-led research initiatives.

Kutryk emphasized the mission’s significance in showcasing global collaboration and unity, highlighting the positive impact of international partnerships in space exploration. Despite challenges on Earth, Kutryk views the space mission as a beacon of hope and inspiration for a brighter future.
