Automaker Stellantis has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armored vehicle manufacturer Roshel regarding a potential sale of its idle Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant. This development coincides with a halt in contract negotiations by the union representing Canadian workers at Stellantis, citing a deadlock concerning the future of the Brampton facility. Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin stated that the company explored various options for the plant, which has been inactive since 2023, and views Roshel as a viable avenue to reestablish sustainable operations. Unifor is currently deliberating on their next course of action and plans to share additional information in the coming days. The existing labor agreement between the automaker and the union is due to expire on September 20 at 11:59 p.m. Discussions commenced on September 1 following Unifor’s approval of new collective agreements with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors in Canada earlier in the summer as part of their standardized bargaining approach with the Detroit Three automakers.
