Southern Saskatchewan experienced a cool and rainy Labour Day, with the southern regions bearing the brunt of the inclement weather. According to Environment Canada, a low-pressure system originating from Montana and North and South Dakota brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to the area from Monday through Tuesday.
Meteorologist Dan Fulton from Environment Canada mentioned that southern and central regions could expect 15 to 25 millimetres of rain, with the possibility of up to 50 millimetres in thunderstorm-prone areas. The rainy conditions led to flooding in various spots, such as a gas station on Sherwood Drive in Regina, as excess rainwater inundated the area.
Residents like Nicole Zahorodin in Weyburn encountered flooded roads, with some areas closed off by police due to the hazardous conditions. The City of Weyburn issued warnings on social media about water pooling in multiple locations and advised against unnecessary travel.
In addition to heavy rainfall, regions like Last Mountain and Hazenmore experienced extreme wind gusts and hail. Val Marie recorded the strongest wind gusts at 93 kilometres per hour, followed closely by the Regina area at around 90 kilometres per hour. Although no storm-related damage reports were received as of Monday morning, Kipling reported baseball-sized hail on Sunday.
Environment Canada forecasts that the rain will subside after Tuesday, bringing relief to the affected areas.
