A battery fire broke out at the Sunbank solar farm in Summerside early Monday, prompting a shelter in place order and voluntary evacuation notice for residents in the vicinity. The Three Oaks family of schools and École-sur-Mer were closed on Tuesday due to concerns about the fire’s impact.
City officials issued the shelter in place order as a precaution because of smoke concerns from the fire. Later, a voluntary evacuation notice was issued for residents within a 500-meter radius of the solar farm. As of Tuesday morning, there were no significant changes in the fire conditions.
The city’s Chief Administrative Officer, JP Desrosiers, mentioned that it is uncertain how long it will take for the fire to burn out since battery fires are challenging to extinguish. Crews are working to contain the fire and maintain safety in the area.
Smoke levels from the fire increased overnight but have since decreased. The Deputy Mayor, Cory Snow, stated that the shelter in place notice will continue until authorities deem it safe for residents to resume normal activities.
City officials suspect the fire started around 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Residents along South Drive were advised to stay indoors, shut windows, and turn off ventilation systems. Air and water quality testing is ongoing, with the city coordinating with provincial authorities for assessments.
The area around the solar farm has a dedicated storm-water system, and water used by firefighters is being monitored for potential contaminants downstream. A reception center at the St. Eleanors Community Centre is available for residents needing assistance. Updates are being shared through the city’s social media platforms.
