Italian skier Sofia Goggia secured her second super-G victory of the season in Soldeu, Andorra, propelling her to a substantial lead in the World Cup super-G rankings. With just two events remaining, Goggia now holds an 84-point advantage over New Zealand’s Alice Robinson and a 116-point lead over Germany’s Emma Aicher. Each race win awards 100 points, contributing significantly to Goggia’s commanding position in the standings.
Following a challenging sixth-place finish in the previous super-G event, Goggia exhibited a strong comeback, outperforming her competitors with a remarkable run. Despite the pressure, she remains focused on taking each race one day at a time. By clinching victory with a time of one minute 25.95 seconds, Goggia displayed her trademark fearless style, edging out Aicher by 0.24 seconds and Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie by 0.31 seconds.
Canadian skier Val Grenier finished 20th in the race, completing the course in 1:28.39, 2.44 seconds behind the lead. Goggia and Robinson have been locked in a battle for the super-G title since the beginning of the season, with Goggia’s recent win adding to her impressive record of nine career super-G victories. While she has claimed the Crystal Globe in downhill four times, Goggia is eager to secure her first season title in the super-G discipline.
In another noteworthy performance, Olympic super-G champion Federica Brignone finished in eighth place, demonstrating improvement from her previous race. Despite a challenging season marred by injury, Brignone returned strong and claimed gold in super-G and giant slalom events at the Milano-Cortina Games. Meanwhile, American skier Mikaela Shiffrin leads the overall standings with 1,133 points, eyeing her sixth overall title as she prepares to compete in upcoming events in Sweden.
The World Cup circuit will continue with a series of races in Italy next weekend, promising more thrilling competition for skiing enthusiasts worldwide.
