“Social Worker Faces Uncertain Future After Sudden Arrest”

Share

Dillon Nolan, a social worker specializing in youth mental health at B.C. Children’s Hospital, faced a sudden turn of events in his life recently. After marrying his partner and excelling at his job, Nolan was unexpectedly arrested outside a music venue in Vancouver and detained in an immigration holding center, where he was ordered to leave Canada.

Nolan, an Irish national, had been living and working in Vancouver since 2022. Despite applying for a work permit renewal in January 2024, his permit was re-examined due to concerns about his field of work, which Nolan disputed. He claimed he never received crucial correspondence from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), leading to the cancellation of his work permit.

Despite his efforts to keep his address updated with IRCC, Nolan was unaware of the developments regarding his work permit. Subsequently, he was deemed inadmissible to Canada for five years due to misrepresentation, a decision communicated through letters he claims he never received.

Nolan’s situation worsened when his application for permanent residence was refused, and he was advised to leave the country. Facing an unexpected departure, Nolan resigned from his job and prepared to return to Ireland. The sudden turn of events left him shocked and confused, especially when he was arrested by authorities just before his scheduled flight.

Throughout this ordeal, Nolan received support from colleagues and supervisors at B.C. Children’s Hospital, who expressed concerns about the impact of his absence on the youth and families he supported. Despite efforts to appeal the decisions made by IRCC, Nolan remains uncertain about his future in Canada, haunted by the experience and unsure if he could return under such circumstances.
