Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building Upgrades Women’s Bathroom Facilities
Since the historic election of Saskatchewan’s first female MLA over a century ago, significant changes have taken place in the province. However, one crucial aspect of equality is just now being addressed at the Legislative Building: bathroom accommodations.
While male MLAs have long had access to a private, multi-stall bathroom located near the legislative chamber for their convenience, female MLAs, who now represent 30% of the province’s legislative chamber, have been limited to a single-stall bathroom on the government side. This has led to instances where women, including those who are pregnant or caring for infants, have had to rush to the limited facilities, only to find them occupied, forcing them to seek alternatives in public washrooms.
The lack of adequate bathroom space for female MLAs, who do not receive maternity leave and often return to work shortly after giving birth, is an ongoing issue. NDP MLA Kim Breckner shared her experience of having to navigate the challenges of using the single-stall bathroom while pregnant.
Recognizing the pressing need for improved facilities, renovations are underway to create a new women’s bathroom with five stalls specifically designated for MLAs. Iris Lang, Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, emphasized the importance of providing a private space for female members, especially those with young children, to ensure their privacy and comfort.
The renovation, estimated to cost around $200,000, is nearing completion and is expected to be finished by June. The initiative has been welcomed by female MLAs, such as Breckner, who emphasized the importance of having equal facilities that cater to the needs of all members.
Building manager Steve Bata highlighted the historical preservation efforts during the renovation, maintaining the building’s heritage elements while creating a modern and functional bathroom space for female MLAs and their families.
The long-overdue upgrade is a significant step towards ensuring gender equality in the Legislative Building and providing necessary support for all MLAs in fulfilling their duties effectively.
