Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his dismay over the deteriorating condition of 24 Sussex Drive, labeling it as a disgrace and urging a resolution concerning the future of the neglected official residence designated for Canada’s prime ministers. During an interview with CBC News: The National, Carney emphasized his desire for his successors to have a presence at 24 Sussex in some capacity.
The historic 19th-century residence, serving as the abode for Canada’s leaders since 1951, has remained uninhabited since 2015 due to its state of disrepair. The National Capital Commission, responsible for overseeing the management of official residences in Ottawa, officially shut down 24 Sussex in 2022. Subsequently, efforts have been made to address issues such as mold, asbestos, lead contamination, and rodent infestation within the premises.
Various prime ministers have been hesitant to undertake the financial and political risks associated with the estimated multimillion-dollar renovation of the official residence. The reluctance to allocate public funds for either extensive renovations or the construction of a new official residence has led to the prolonged neglect of 24 Sussex.
When asked about plans to address the situation at 24 Sussex, Carney stressed the importance of leaving things in a better state than when one found them. Expressing his disappointment with the current condition of 24 Sussex, Carney emphasized the urgency of rectifying the situation.
Following the closure of 24 Sussex, Justin Trudeau relocated his family to Rideau Cottage, a temporary red brick dwelling situated on the grounds of Rideau Hall. However, Rideau Cottage has been deemed inadequate and poses security risks, according to a government memorandum issued last summer.
Carney highlighted the necessity for future prime ministers to have suitable accommodations that facilitate hosting foreign dignitaries and engaging with Canadians. Recent discussions have hinted at a forthcoming decision regarding the fate of 24 Sussex, with potential options including renovating the existing property, relocating to a more secure area in Rockcliffe Park, or enhancing Rideau Cottage as the new official residence.
Trudeau’s initiative to address the housing predicament involved proposing the establishment of an advisory committee to evaluate the feasibility and requirements of a new prime ministerial residence. However, the government has yet to confirm the formation of this advisory panel.
The projected costs for addressing the 24 Sussex dilemma range from tens of millions to potentially exceeding $100 million, as per official estimates. Carney’s sentiments underscore the pressing need for action to resolve the longstanding issue surrounding 24 Sussex Drive and provide future prime ministers with a suitable abode for their official duties.
