“Saskatchewan Company Pioneers Natural Hydrogen Drilling”

A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaging in hydrogen drilling activities to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from natural deposits on a large commercial scale rather than relying on fossil fuel production. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated the drilling of its third well at the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan, with the aim of establishing what could potentially be the world’s initial large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system.

Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial component for various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. He highlighted the need for a more sustainable method of sourcing hydrogen, underscoring the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen to address this need.

Hydrogen is a versatile gas utilized as a fuel or in fuel cells for power generation, emitting only water as a byproduct and producing no direct greenhouse gases. Its applications span across sectors like transportation and steelmaking, offering a promising solution to reduce emissions. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen, termed grey hydrogen, is currently derived from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, resulting in substantial carbon dioxide emissions.

In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers a greener alternative but is still economically challenging. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a unique opportunity as it occurs naturally in underground deposits, potentially leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and cost-effective production compared to conventional methods.

The extraction of natural hydrogen involves utilizing existing drilling techniques and equipment employed in the extraction of natural gas and helium. While acknowledging the potential benefits of natural hydrogen, experts caution that specialized techniques are required compared to traditional oil and gas drilling methods.

Natural hydrogen is formed underground through processes such as the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks or radioactive decay of elements like uranium and thorium. Although rich deposits of natural hydrogen are considered rare due to its volatile nature, recent discoveries in Canada, including Saskatchewan, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, indicate a growing interest in exploring this energy source.

Challenges remain in effectively extracting hydrogen from underground deposits, with estimates and assessments crucial for determining commercial viability. Ongoing projects worldwide, including those in France and Nova Scotia, are in early stages of development, suggesting that further research and exploration are needed to assess the potential impact of natural hydrogen on decarbonization efforts.
