Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Members of Parliament who switch to the Liberal caucus align with the party’s platform. He emphasized the diverse perspectives brought by recent floor-crossers, enhancing the government’s effectiveness. Carney addressed the recent move of Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu to the Liberal Party, bolstering their seats to 171, close to a majority.

When questioned about Gladu’s conflicting views on certain issues like abortion, vaccines, and cannabis, Carney expressed confidence that she would align with the government on critical matters. He highlighted Gladu’s background in engineering and consulting, emphasizing her collaborative nature and business acumen.

Carney noted that Gladu is the fifth MP to switch parties in the past months, following others from different regions, all in support of the Liberal policy agenda. He stressed the importance of diverse perspectives in governance, recognizing the value these new members bring to the table.

Regarding potential future defections, Carney indicated that core Liberal principles, including solidarity, inclusivity, and sustainability, guide their acceptance of new members. The Liberal Party is reportedly in discussions with nine more MPs about potentially crossing the floor, although Carney remained cautious about predicting further defections during the recent Liberal convention in Montreal.

Carney underscored the ongoing dialogue within the party and the importance of aligning with fundamental values and ambitions for the country. He emphasized the welcoming nature of the Liberal Party while acknowledging the evolving dynamics of political alliances.
