“Pimicikamak Cree Nation Faces Water Crisis After Power Outage”

Share

Murray Trout moves restlessly around his living area while plumbers hurry down the corridor to address another burst water pipe issue in Pimicikamak Cree Nation. Murky water has flooded the space under his house and spilled into the backyard, leaving Trout facing a future without running water. Concerns about potential mold growth due to the flooding did not alter his decision to stay put despite the challenges.

In the aftermath of a four-day power outage and subsequent plumbing problems that forced 4,000 individuals out of Pimicikamak, Trout’s situation reflects why the return for many evacuees to the northern First Nation may be delayed, with some opting to remain in the community. These residents, labeled as holdouts, are either dealing with water and sewage issues at their own residences or assisting others facing similar challenges.

According to Todd McConnell, a plumber aiding local tradespeople in Pimicikamak, fortunate homes are scarce amidst the widespread damage caused by frozen and burst pipes following the power outage during freezing temperatures in late December. The extent of the damage, affecting hundreds of homes, is still being assessed, with at least 200 homes deemed uninhabitable.

Repairing the damages and restoring services in Pimicikamak is expected to take several weeks, if not months, as stated by McConnell. Efforts are prioritizing essential needs, particularly for seniors and children, before progressing to other repairs. Despite the hardships, some residents like Morris McKay have managed to keep their homes functional, providing a safe haven for family members in need.

The community’s resilience is evident through individuals like Edith Blacksmith, who selflessly supports her neighbors by distributing food hampers and offering assistance. Despite escaping damage to her own home, she remains committed to aiding those struggling in the community.

Pimicikamak Chief David Monias has urged patience from evacuees, emphasizing the limited capacity to accommodate returns until repairs are completed. The community is preparing to host military personnel to assist in the restoration efforts. Residents are encouraged to allow the necessary time for the community to address the challenges before attempting to return.

The spirit of unity and perseverance in Pimicikamak shines through as residents come together to support one another during these challenging times.
