Pierre Poilievre Advocates Global Free Trade

Share

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the significance of “free trade” among “free nations” during a speech that highlighted figures such as Adam Smith, Winston Churchill, and the legendary Robin Hood. Poilievre, currently on his inaugural overseas visit as Opposition leader, presented the Margaret Thatcher lecture at the Centre for Policy Studies in London on Tuesday. Stressing the need for Canada to bolster its domestic strength to wield unwavering influence internationally, Poilievre advocated for forging trade partnerships with like-minded, freedom-embracing nations.

In his address, Poilievre touched on his typical themes of inflation and balanced budgets. However, this speech marks a shift in focus for the Conservative leader towards global trade challenges, including those posed by U.S. President Donald Trump. While not directly mentioning the U.S. president on this occasion, Poilievre pointed out the fragmentation of global trade agreements and the potential consequences of disrupted supply chains and alliances.

Proposing a closer economic collaboration among Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, Poilievre suggested eliminating regulatory barriers to facilitate cross-border professional employment and mutual recognition of product safety approvals. Additionally, he called for joint efforts in defense procurement, energy initiatives, and critical mineral extraction among the four nations.

The audience, which included former UK prime minister Liz Truss, bestowed a standing ovation upon Poilievre at the conclusion of his speech. UK Conservative MP Andrew Bowie praised the passionate defense of capitalism presented by Poilievre, portraying optimism for addressing challenges through center-right solutions.

As Prime Minister Mark Carney engages in strengthening ties with Australia and other nations, Poilievre is scheduled to continue his international trip by traveling to Germany for discussions with business leaders. The purpose of Poilievre’s speech and travel endeavors is seen as an effort to enhance his credibility in fields where Carney holds an advantage in experience and global presence.
