“Old Ottawa South Delights in ‘Bellwood Boulder’ Discovery”

Share

Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that narrates the discovery of an ancient boulder during city operations in the neighborhood amid the COVID-19 crisis. Gauri Sreenivasan, a resident on Bellwood Avenue, emphasized the significance of the sign as a tool for public education and engagement during an unveiling event at Windsor Park.

The signage details the origins of the massive erratic stone, now affectionately known as the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was left behind by glaciers around 10,000 years ago and remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021 when it was revealed during water pipe replacements.

During the pandemic lockdown, Sreenivasan and other residents found solace in the presence of the giant rock, which became a gathering spot for the community, fostering connections and providing a sense of togetherness. Despite initial plans to crush the boulder for removal, residents, led by Sreenivasan, advocated for its preservation, highlighting its role as a symbol of unity during a time of isolation.

Following residents’ appeals to the local city councilor, the boulder was carefully transported to its new location in Windsor Park, much to the delight of community members like Lindsay Suthren, who expressed excitement over the unexpected discovery in their former neighborhood.

Sreenivasan hopes that visitors who read the sign will appreciate the collective effort that saved the boulder from destruction, underscoring the power of community action and unity in preserving historical and meaningful landmarks. The story of the Bellwood Boulder stands as a testament to the strength of community bonds and the positive impact of coming together for a common cause.
