“Nor’easter Batters U.S. Northeast Coast, Causing Floods and Outages”

Residents along the U.S. northeast coast faced challenges navigating floodwaters for a second consecutive day as a potent nor’easter battered the shoreline on Sunday, causing power outages for tens of thousands of households. Tidal surges inundated low-lying neighborhoods in New Jersey, while strong winds in New York’s Long Island uprooted trees, causing property damage and toppling utility poles.

In Sea Bright, New Jersey, residents experienced recurrent flooding with each high tide, leading to water accumulating in garages and homes. The slow-moving storm, which tragically claimed the life of a New York City housing authority worker due to a fallen tree on Saturday, was forecasted to persist through Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall, high winds, and hazardous surf conditions up to New England.

The region saw significant rainfall amounts, exceeding 10 centimeters in some New Jersey areas since Friday, coupled with rising ocean levels that resulted in unprecedented flooding not witnessed in nearly a decade. Although the storm’s impact was not as severe as Superstorm Sandy in 2012, it signaled the potential for more storms along the East Coast this autumn due to disruptive El Niño weather patterns.

The nor’easter reignited concerns about coastal erosion as images of powerful waves crashing into sea defenses and beaches circulated. Over 100,000 customers in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions experienced power outages at various points on Sunday, primarily in coastal counties from New Jersey to Connecticut.

Flight operations along the coast were significantly affected, with more than 250 cancellations at Boston Logan International Airport by late Sunday morning due to wind gusts reaching 64 km/h. The storm’s remnants were expected to bring continued rainfall from northern New Jersey to southern New England on Sunday, with tidal flooding anticipated through the night.

In the aftermath of the storm, residents in affected areas recounted their experiences, with some describing this as the worst flooding in a decade. Despite the challenges, communities like Sea Bright, New Jersey, have implemented measures such as elevating home structures and using sandbags to mitigate flood risks, reflecting lessons learned from past disasters like Superstorm Sandy.

As the region grappled with the aftermath of the nor’easter, residents remained resilient, adapting to the circumstances, and demonstrating preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
