Managing Editor Whitney Moran firmly believes that once AI is employed, the essence of authorship is compromised, undermining the core mission of sharing authentic human stories.
Moran emphasizes the publisher’s obligation not only to disseminate authors’ words but also to safeguard their intellectual property. She asserts that utilizing generative AI to craft content contradicts Nimbus’s values. With no industry-wide regulations yet in place, Nimbus has crafted its own AI policy, explicitly prohibiting the use of generative AI for text, artwork, editorial, or publicity materials.
While Nimbus remains steadfast in its human-centric approach, there are proponents of AI in the literary domain. Olivier Blais, the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Moov AI, an AI consulting firm in Quebec, lauds AI as a valuable tool that streamlines the writing process for individuals lacking expertise in the field. Blais, who is also involved in the federal government’s AI advisory council, acknowledges the convenience AI offers in structuring and refining content.
Despite the potential benefits AI presents, critics like Paul MacKay, the manager of the King’s Co-op Bookstore in Halifax, express concerns about the technology’s adverse impact on the publishing industry. MacKay believes that the proliferation of AI-generated content jeopardizes the quality of literary works and threatens traditional publishing roles, from editors to cover artists.
As the industry grapples with the implications of AI, Nimbus remains resolute in its commitment to human-authored content. While AI’s role in literature continues to evolve, publishers like Nimbus are determined to uphold the integrity of human creativity and storytelling.
