A peculiar wonder of nature, the narwhal tusk, is a unique feature that can grow up to three meters in length. Unlike other mammal tusks, the narwhal’s tusk grows perfectly straight without any curves. International researchers have recently uncovered the mystery behind its straight growth, revealing that the tusk’s distinctive pattern of opposing spirals is the key factor.
Published in the journal Nature Communications, a new study dissects how the two opposing spirals – one to the right and the other to the left – contribute to the straight growth of the narwhal tusk. The research journey began when Henrik Birkedal, a study author from Aarhus University in Denmark, was approached by a colleague exploring the handedness of molecules. Intrigued by the consistent leftward spirals of narwhal tusks, Birkedal embarked on an investigation.
Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team delved into the molecular composition of narwhal tusks and their spirals. Through advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans, they uncovered two opposing spirals within the tusks – a left-handed spiral in the outer layer of cementum and a right-handed spiral in the inner layer of dentine.
This discovery goes beyond a mere spiral pattern; it sheds light on the structural principles not only of narwhal tusks but also potentially on human bones and similar biological instances. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist from Harvard University, praised the research for delving into the intricacies of what he deems “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” Nweeia’s past research has highlighted the tusk’s primary function as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding purposes.
Looking ahead, Nweeia hopes for future research collaborations with Indigenous communities during off-season studies, emphasizing the invaluable insights that traditional knowledge can provide. This interdisciplinary approach, as demonstrated in Birkedal’s recent study with teams from Greenland and Sweden, showcases the importance of diverse perspectives converging to unravel scientific mysteries and advance understanding in complex biological phenomena.
