“Dorm Room Makeovers Go Viral on TikTok and Beyond”

In the early 2000s, dorm room decor was basic, typically comprising a “bed in a bag,” a milk crate, and a shower caddy. While these items didn’t do much to brighten the shared cement room, they provided a sense of ownership. However, the trend has evolved, as showcased on social media platforms like TikTok, where professional designers now create lavish dorm room makeovers. These transformations, featuring ruffled bedspreads, canopied headboards, sectional sofas, and elegant lighting, are gaining immense popularity online.

Dorm room upgrades and reveals have become a sensation on platforms like TikTok and Facebook, with dedicated hashtags and groups where design ideas are exchanged. Magazines and Pinterest boards offer a plethora of inspiration for creating themed dorm rooms, ranging from “cottagecore nature” to “coastal dream.” Even major retailers like Ikea provide design suggestions for a modern look with a significant price tag.

The trend of elaborate dorm room transformations is primarily driven by social media in the U.S. Parents are increasingly willing to invest in these makeovers, with some interior designers specializing in dorm rooms charging up to $20,000. According to the National Retail Federation, college back-to-school shoppers in the U.S. are expected to spend around $14 billion on dorm and apartment furnishings this season, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

The surge in interest in dorm room decor is attributed to the desire for personal expression and creating a cozy, home-like environment within the confines of a dormitory. Designers emphasize the importance of making these spaces warm and inviting, especially since most dorm rooms start with stark features like cinderblock walls and fluorescent lighting. The trend of elaborate dorm makeovers seems more prevalent in the U.S., with a growing interest in Canada as well, as seen through increased searches and discussions on social media platforms and retailers offering dorm decor collections.

While Canadian students also personalize their dorm rooms, there may be limitations imposed by schools on the extent of modifications allowed. However, there is a noticeable trend towards creating themed dorm decorations and adding personal touches to make the space feel more welcoming and reflective of individual personalities.
