Ads promoting a documentary that scrutinizes controversial billionaire Elon Musk were initially prohibited on TikTok and X platforms but have now been allowed on YouTube and Meta’s social media sites after a brief delay. The trailer for the nearly four-hour film titled “Musk” was released on Thursday in anticipation of its theatrical launch on October 9.
According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday, indie distributor Bleecker Street faced rejection from all four companies when attempting to purchase ads for the documentary. YouTube, TikTok, and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, cited “political content” as the reason for rejection, while X, owned by Musk, did not provide a comment.
Following backlash online, YouTube confirmed on Saturday that ads for “Musk” are now running on the platform after a temporary restriction was lifted upon review. Meta also stated to CBC News on Monday that the ads had been mistakenly rejected and have since been reinstated, without further details provided.
TikTok does not allow paid political ads, and Meta restricts them in certain regions such as the European Union. YouTube permits political ads with transparency disclosures, and X allows them in regions like the U.S.
Musk’s involvement in politics heightened when he supported Donald Trump’s re-election campaign in 2024 and later served in his administration. The documentary explores allegations that Musk, despite advocating for free speech, may have used his Starlink satellites to influence the 2024 election improperly.
Following approval from YouTube and Meta for the ads, director Alex Gibney acknowledged the impact of public pressure in a statement. Musk has criticized the documentary as a “hit piece” and has been actively vocal against it since its debut. The film has received positive reviews from critics, portraying a critical perspective on Musk’s influence and power.
Apart from Musk, other tech billionaires are also under scrutiny this year, with a film focusing on Mark Zuckerberg set to be released soon. Gibney’s documentary has been praised for its critical examination of Musk’s actions and influence, leaving viewers concerned about his amassed wealth and power.
