Microsoft to Cut 4,800 Jobs in Gaming Division

Microsoft announced on Monday that it plans to reduce its workforce by 4,800 employees, which accounts for approximately 2.1% of its global staff. This move is part of a restructuring initiative that includes revamping its Xbox gaming division and divesting up to five studios. The company aims to improve its financial performance following significant investments in the gaming sector.

Within the gaming division, 3,200 job cuts are expected, with 1,600 employees being laid off on the same day. Despite substantial investments, including the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has faced challenges in closing the gap with competitors like Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo. Consequently, the company is reevaluating its gaming strategy.

Microsoft is shifting its focus towards distributing games across multiple platforms rather than relying solely on console-exclusive titles to drive hardware sales for Xbox. As part of the restructuring, four studios will be divested, with Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions becoming independent entities. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will also be spun off to work on upcoming game titles.

Asha Sharma, the new head of the division, informed employees about these changes in a note. Additionally, discussions have commenced with the union at Arkane Studios in France to explore options amid the restructuring. Sharma highlighted the need for these changes, stating that the current business situation is not sustainable, with significantly lower profit margins compared to similar businesses.

In response to these developments, Compulsion Games expressed gratitude for its time with Xbox and emphasized its commitment to supporting its team through the transition period. The restructuring is part of a broader trend in the tech industry, with companies like Amazon and Meta also implementing significant changes to adapt to evolving market dynamics.

While Microsoft’s stock experienced a minor decline following the announcement, analysts suggest that the focus should be on the company’s ability to scale AI monetization efficiently. Microsoft’s strategic workforce adjustments, coupled with advancements in AI technologies, are vital in driving sustainable growth and innovation in the competitive tech landscape.
