When the Famous Players Six cinema in Prince George, British Columbia did not receive the promotional posters for the movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” employee and artist Drake Landon took matters into his own hands.
Due to a shipping error, the theatre did not receive the official posters for the latest Spider-Man release. In response, Landon, a 19-year-old artist, was asked by his manager to create a replacement poster in the style of the popular internet meme, Spooderman.
Spooderman is a humorously drawn parody of Marvel’s Spider-Man that originated around 2012. Landon, although capable of drawing the actual Spider-Man, decided to create the Spooderman poster, aligning it with the design theme of “Brand New Day.”
Alongside his hand-drawn movie poster, Landon included a brief message apologizing for the absence of the official posters and any resulting inconvenience to moviegoers.
The impromptu Spooderman poster caught the attention of Adam Woodrow, a patron of Famous Players who visited the theatre with his son Rogan. Rogan captured a photo of Landon next to his creation and shared it on local community platforms.
The online posts about Landon and his Spooderman poster quickly gained traction, receiving thousands of likes across various platforms, including the Marvel Studios subreddit where it garnered over 54,000 upvotes.
Despite the recognition, Landon humbly attributes the success of the drawing to the original Spooderman concept and its creator from years ago. While people have suggested that he draw all movie posters at the theatre or sell his Spooderman artworks, Landon prefers to focus on drawing robots, intricate machinery, and weapons in his free time.
Although Drake Landon’s Spooderman poster will be replaced by the official “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” poster, Cineplex plans to find a new location within the theatre to showcase Landon’s hand-drawn rendition.
Landon expresses his desire to create prints of his now-famous poster, while his father, Craig Landon, is proud of his son’s creative talents and the attention he is receiving for it in the community and online.
