Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah have reached an agreement to cease intense clashes in southern Lebanon that posed a threat to a temporary deal between the United States and Iran to end their conflict. The truce, although not yet officially confirmed by either party, came after a violent exchange resulting in the death of 47 individuals in Lebanon and four Israeli soldiers.
Following the onset of broader hostilities, Hezbollah and Israel engaged in warfare, with Hezbollah launching rockets and drones at civilian areas in northern Israel while Israel seized control of large portions of southern Lebanon. The interim agreement, aimed at concluding the Iran conflict, has already led to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, previously shut down by Iran, causing disruptions in global oil and gas supplies. Additionally, the pact will reignite discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear program, a central issue that triggered the conflict between Israel and the U.S. on February 28.
However, the agreement is now under threat, particularly from Lebanon, where the fighting caused a postponement of planned talks in Switzerland. The terms of the deal entail a cessation of military operations in Lebanon and the preservation of its sovereignty, even though Israel and Hezbollah are not direct participants in the agreement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has pledged to maintain Israeli forces in southern Lebanon until the perceived threat is eliminated, while Hezbollah has insisted on continuing its attacks unless Israel commits to withdrawing from Lebanon, a condition also stipulated by Iran. Efforts to mediate the ceasefire were reportedly spearheaded by Qatar, the U.S., and Iran.
Despite reports of the ceasefire, the sound of Israeli artillery fire persisted along the Lebanese border, with an explosion witnessed in Lebanon. Israeli officials have not yet officially commented on the development. Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesperson affirmed that operations would continue as instructed by the government within a forward defense zone.
Expressions of commitment to an immediate ceasefire were voiced by Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., contingent on Hezbollah honoring the agreement and ceasing hostile actions. The situation remains tense, with ongoing discussions and plans for further negotiations to bring a permanent end to the conflict.
