Hamilton’s associate medical officer of health has provided further information and context regarding the recent findings by the public health department in relation to the soot that covered various neighborhoods in the city in July. Dr. Bart Harvey emphasized that the department did not intend to imply that the emissions had no impact on long-term health. Rather, the focus was on highlighting the continuous presence of pollutants in Hamilton’s air that all residents are exposed to regularly.
In early July, many Hamilton residents reported discovering a black soot-like substance on their properties, pets, and family members. While black fallout has been an ongoing concern in the city, particularly near industrial areas, the soot observed in July was noted to be more widespread and pronounced than usual.
Following investigations, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks identified emissions from Birla Carbon as a significant source of the recent grime. Despite this, Hamilton’s public health department, after analyzing data from air monitors and emergency rooms, found no evidence of short-term health effects necessitating urgent medical attention, although minor symptoms like itchy eyes or sore throats were reported.
Dr. Harvey stated that the soot samples mainly contained carbon and other pollutants commonly found in Hamilton’s air. While acknowledging improvements in air quality, he highlighted the presence of pollutants such as benzo(a)pyrene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that pose health risks.
Referencing a 2024 public health report, it was noted that fine particulate matter and sulphur dioxide in the air are associated with various health effects, and air pollution was linked to a significant number of deaths in Hamilton. Researcher Matthew Adams also highlighted the health risks associated with exposure to pollutants, especially for children who are more vulnerable due to their higher rate of breathing and ongoing physical development.
Adams advocated for the implementation of technologies to reduce industrial emissions to mitigate the health risks posed by air pollution. Public health recommended cleaning the grime using soap and water or mild detergent to avoid inhaling particles and advised washing produce before consumption to minimize exposure.
Overall, the public health department stressed the importance of addressing air quality concerns and reducing emissions to protect the health of Hamilton residents, particularly those living in areas with higher pollution levels.
