Greenland’s Nivi Rosing Fights Trump’s Threats

Share

Greenland has been impacted by the intimidation and threats from Donald Trump, although the immediate coercion has subsided. The youngest member of Parliament for Greenland, Nivi Rosing, expressed the widespread fear and anxiety that persists among the island’s inhabitants. Trump’s discussions about annexing Greenland began in 2019 and intensified in recent months.

Despite Trump’s recent agreement to involve NATO in Greenland’s military planning and establish a working group with Danish and Greenlandic representatives to address U.S. concerns, Rosing highlighted that the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s actions continues to unsettle the people of Greenland. The unpredictability of Trump’s behavior has led to extreme measures, such as dog owners vaccinating their pets in preparation for a potential invasion.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, emphasized in a parliamentary session that Trump’s desire to control Greenland persists, cautioning against complacency. Nivi Rosing, who has experienced a rapid political ascent, started her journey in Canada a year ago, studying Inuit Studies in Ottawa before transitioning into Greenland’s political landscape.

Recently, Rosing engaged in high-level diplomacy, meeting with U.S. lawmakers alongside Danish and Greenlandic parliamentarians in Copenhagen. The discussions emphasized Greenland’s desire for sovereignty and self-determination, asserting their identity as Greenlanders rather than Danes or Americans. Rosing highlighted the importance of fostering connections between Canada and Greenland to counter potential future threats from the U.S.

The establishment of the Canadian consulate in Nuuk this week, attended by Rosing, signals a step towards strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on Arctic governance and security. Rosing’s commitment to building ties between Canada and Greenland reflects a shared vision of cultural, educational, and business collaboration. Despite challenges in travel between Canada and Greenland, Rosing remains dedicated to her mandate and the uncertain geopolitical landscape involving Greenland’s future.
