Alberta Farm Welcomes Rare Triplet Calves

Share

Albertans rang in the new year with excitement, and Stacey Simpson, the owner of Lucky 7 Cattle Co., found herself astonished shortly after the countdown. Located near Sedgewick, Alta., she witnessed a rare event on her farm as her five-year-old heifer, Dukey, went into labor just three hours into 2026. To her surprise, Dukey gave birth to not one, but two calves, with the unexpected twist of a third calf on the way.

After a quick check by Simpson’s father, the third calf’s feet were already emerging. Dukey successfully delivered triplets – Carla, Darla, and Marla – a remarkable occurrence given the challenges associated with triplet births in cattle. This was not the first time Lucky 7 had experienced a set of thriving triplets; Dukey’s mother had also birthed a trio the previous year, named Hewey, Dewey, and Louie, who are still part of the farm’s herd.

The odds of having two sets of triplets on a farm with only 35 cows are incredibly slim, making this event truly extraordinary. The decision on the future of Carla, Darla, and Marla at Lucky 7 Cattle Co. is pending, as they may either be kept for breeding purposes or sold. Stacey Simpson expressed her delight in sharing the rare occurrence with the world, as a video featuring the mother and her calves on the farm’s Facebook page quickly gained popularity, attracting millions of views and international attention.
