The Green Party of Canada is now left with a single contender for its leadership position following Nira Dookeran’s withdrawal from the race. Dookeran, based in Ottawa, cited personal and family reasons for her decision to step down, leaving former MP Mike Morrice from Kitchener, Ontario, as the sole candidate in the running.
Expressing her well wishes to Morrice, Dookeran acknowledged the abundance of talent, experience, and dedication within the Green Party across the nation. The party, in response, thanked Dookeran for her commitment and effort in the leadership race.
Morrice, in a statement, extended his gratitude to Dookeran and emphasized the importance of continuing the campaign to expand the party’s reach and address pressing issues like climate change and economic inequality.
The Green Party of Canada initiated its five-month leadership race on June 11, with current leader Elizabeth May planning to step down in November after serving since 2006. The party’s leadership history includes May’s prior resignation in 2009, followed by Annamie Paul’s election in 2020, and May’s return as co-leader alongside Jonathan Pedneault in 2022.
Pedneault resigned in April 2025, which led to Morrice assuming the role of deputy leader and being designated as the party’s candidate for the upcoming federal election. The future of the leadership race remains uncertain, with the party promising to provide updates as they become available.
Voting for the new Green Party leader is scheduled from November 2 to 13, with the announcement of the results anticipated on November 14.
