Former Canadian Transport Minister, David Collenette, recounted his experience on the morning of September 11, 2001, in Montreal. As he addressed the audience, he was interrupted with news of the tragic events unfolding in the United States, including the hijacking of passenger jets targeting the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
In response, Collenette made pivotal decisions in aviation history, directing 229 passenger jets to land at Canadian airports, such as Gander, St. John’s, Stephenville, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Passengers were asked to remain on board the planes until security clearance was ensured to eliminate any potential threats.
Reflecting on these events at an event called “Untold Stories — Reconnected” at Gander International Airport, Collenette emphasized the importance of the decisions made that day. The gathering commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
Following the airspace closure, 38 commercial airliners landed in Gander, bringing approximately 7,000 passengers and crew to the Newfoundland town. This unexpected influx prompted a remarkable humanitarian response from the community, inspiring the hit musical “Come From Away” and fostering enduring bonds between the stranded individuals and their caregivers.
Among the speakers at the event were three pilots who landed in Gander, including Guy Gullick, who piloted the last plane to arrive that day. The pilots praised the unparalleled hospitality and support they received during their stay, highlighting the kindness and compassion shown by locals like Susan Scharpegge, who went above and beyond to assist them.
The humanitarian efforts extended to various community members, with individuals like Salvation Army officer Marlene George and bus driver Frazer Lush offering their assistance and support to the stranded passengers. Collenette acknowledged the rapid response required on that fateful day, underscoring the collective effort to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.
