“PM Carney Maintains Communication with Trump Amid Trade Tensions”

Share

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that he maintains regular communication with U.S. President Donald Trump despite the ongoing trade tensions and negative comments from administration officials. Carney mentioned that recent discussions with Trump have revolved around global events, particularly focusing on the impact of conflicts in Ukraine and Iran on international energy and grain markets. During a press conference alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Carney highlighted the importance of working with the United States on various issues.

Although tariff negotiations between Canada and the U.S. collapsed recently, leading to reciprocal levies and additional tariffs, Carney remains optimistic about the possibility of reaching a fair agreement with the U.S. He emphasized Canada’s readiness to engage in mutually beneficial trade deals with its neighbor.

Despite disparaging remarks made by Trump and some of his key cabinet members towards Canada, Carney has pushed back against such comments, labeling them as inappropriate. When questioned about the reasons behind Trump’s continued criticism of Canada post-negotiation breakdown, Carney refrained from speculating, emphasizing that it is a matter of sovereignty for Canada rather than emotional sentiments.

Carney’s diplomatic approach in handling the trade dispute with the U.S. reflects Canada’s commitment to pursuing constructive dialogue and seeking mutually beneficial outcomes in trade relations.
