Three students tragically lost their lives in a school shooting that occurred in the southern Philippines on Friday. Among the deceased was a 16-year-old suspected gunman who ultimately took his own life. Provincial officials reported that eight others sustained injuries, with four in critical condition. The victims, aged between 14 and 17, were all students in Banga town, South Cotabato.
Albert Palencia, the mayor of Banga town, revealed that the suspected shooter had warned his friends about his intentions after lunch, stating, “I will be executing my plan.” Despite his friends dismissing it as a joke due to his known jovial nature, the shooter proceeded to open fire on students post-lunch. He injured 10 students before turning the gun on himself.
Governor Reynaldo Tamayo of South Cotabato emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership, urging parents to secure firearms away from minors. He highlighted the challenge of expecting limited security personnel to monitor a large student population, stressing the need for collaborative efforts in addressing such incidents.
This tragic event adds to a recent series of fatal gun-related incidents in Philippine schools, a previously uncommon occurrence. In a similar incident last month, a student live-streamed himself shooting and killing another student in Zamboanga, followed by taking his own life. Additionally, in June, a public high school in Tacloban witnessed an attack where three students lost their lives and around 20 others were injured when two classmates carried out a shooting on campus.
Although the Philippines enforces strict regulations regarding gun ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations, the presence of illegal firearms in circulation continues to pose significant challenges.
