Canada’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup will include a visit to Edmonton. An upcoming friendly soccer match between the Canadian and Uzbekistani men’s national teams is scheduled for June 1 at Commonwealth Stadium in the city.

This match precedes the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the first-ever men’s tournament matches on Canadian soil will be held in Vancouver and Toronto. The tournament, taking place from June 11 to July 19, marks the first time the Uzbekistan team has qualified for the event. Edmonton, which lost a bid to host the 2026 World Cup, will now host this friendly match.

Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack anticipates the game will bring a total economic impact of $21 million to the city. Notably, Canadian team captain Alphonso Davies, a hometown hero, will lead the team in Edmonton for the first time since the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Richie Laryea, a member of the Canadian men’s national team, expressed excitement about returning to play in Edmonton. Team coach Jesse Marsch believes the match has the potential to be a significant event, expecting a sold-out stadium given the team’s current strength and the support for their captain.

Canada is set to host 13 matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making it the largest tournament in FIFA history with 48 countries competing in various North American cities. The team values the home-crowd advantage, as demonstrated in their 2021 qualifying win against Mexico.

Ali Majed, a coach at Soccer Elite Academy in Edmonton, mentioned that recent successes in soccer have inspired young athletes in Canada, raising the sport’s profile. Commonwealth Stadium has a history of hosting FIFA events, and preparations are underway to ensure a natural grass pitch for the exhibition game.

Despite concerns about Alberta separatist sentiments, Mayor Knack affirmed Edmonton’s readiness to support the Canadian national team. The upcoming match against Uzbekistan will be a significant test for Canada as they prepare for the World Cup. Tickets for the Edmonton friendly will go on sale starting January 23.
