“Electric Vehicle Enthusiasts Cruise Edmonton’s Night Streets”

Josh Hunter has been organizing evening rides on personal electric vehicles (PEVs) in Edmonton for five years. A diverse mix of electric-powered scooters, bicycles, skateboards, and unicycles gathered at the Alberta Legislature grounds for an early season tour. While PEVs are commonly used for eco-friendly commuting during the day, they are increasingly popular as a social recreational activity in Canadian cities after dark.

PEV Edmonton, led by Hunter, typically starts its season in June. However, with favorable weather conditions, around two dozen riders were eager to embark on a nighttime adventure through Edmonton’s river valley pathways and streets. Hunter humorously likened the group to a modern-day biker gang, welcoming participants of all ages as long as they have a personal electric vehicle and wear a helmet, which is strictly enforced.

During the ride, many participants showcased their customized PEVs adorned with vibrant lights and accessories, proudly discussing their motor power. While some riders were enthusiasts, others on rental e-scooters from companies like Lime, Neuron, and Bird were casually exploring the city without a specific destination.

The recreational appeal of riding PEVs at night was evident as riders like Habib Baalbaki and Zeinab Awada saw it as a fun date activity. Meanwhile, riders like Kyson Fitzner sought the thrill and adrenaline rush of nighttime cruising, showcasing stunts like jumping curbs on their electric vehicles.

Companies offering rental e-scooters and e-bikes in Canada reported a significant uptick in ridership during evening hours and on weekends. Shared e-scooter usage during the nighttime economy accounted for a considerable portion of Neuron’s trips, with recreational riding being a common trend, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In various Canadian cities, groups like PEV Edmonton engage in after-hours e-vehicle rides, attracting attention from onlookers and motorists. Despite the growing popularity of PEVs, concerns regarding safety and regulations persist, with reports of increasing e-scooter-related injuries across the country.

Enthusiasts like Trevor Neufeld emphasized the passion and dedication involved in riding PEVs, with some investing in expensive customized rides for their weekly excursions. While enjoying the affordable nature of rental e-scooters, riders like Damon Spence stressed the importance of safety measures and being mindful of traffic rules during their outings.

As the popularity of PEVs continues to rise, discussions around safety, regulations, and responsible riding behavior remain crucial for both riders and authorities in Canadian cities.
